Advanced Gameplay FAQ: Introduction to Synchro Monsters 300px-AllyofJusticeCatastor-TF04-JP-VG

Synchro Monsters are a type of Monster Card, first released in Starter Deck 2008. The color of their card frame is white. These cards are placed in the Extra Deck.
To be Summoned, Synchro Monsters require Tuner monsters to be face-up on your field. When the total Level of the Tuner monster and any other face-up monsters on your field exactly matches the Level of the Synchro Monster you wish to Summon (no more or less), by sending them to the Graveyard, you can Synchro Summon the Synchro Monster. The monsters used are referred to as Synchro Material Monsters.

Some Synchro Monsters require a specific Tuner monster in order to be Synchro Summoned (such as "Junk Synchron" for "Junk Warrior") or monsters of a particular Type or Attribute as Material Monsters, but many do not, so they can be in just about any Extra Deck. Synchro Monsters are generally more splashable in decks than Fusion and Ritual Monsters, as many require just a single Tuner and another monster to Summon them, and almost any Deck can run a few Tuners. Ritual and Fusion monsters on the other hand, generally require certain specific monsters to be on your field or in your Graveyard to Summon them, long with the proper Spell card.

Because Synchro Monsters belong in the Extra Deck, they return there whenever they would be returned to the hand or Main Deck, like Fusion Monsters before. Also, like Fusion Monsters, they cannot be Special Summoned from the Graveyard if they were not properly Synchro Summoned first. As with all special summoning certain criteria must be met.

Some players have begun to use the term 'Synchronize', 'Sync', or 'Tune/Tuning' to then list which Tuner monster and non-Tuner monsters will be sent to the Graveyard when they perform a Synchro Summon and Summoning a Synchro Monster. (i.e. "I tune my "Quillbolt Hedgehog" [LV2] and "Speed Warrior" [LV2] with my "Junk Synchron" [LV3] to Synchro Summon "Junk Archer" [LV7, requires "Junk Synchron" as the Tuner]!")

There are currently no Aqua or Fish-Type Synchro Monsters in TCG or OCG. However, Konami has released Synchro Monsters for certain archetypes of monsters, including "Alien", "Laval", "Six Samurai", "Iron Chain", "XX-Saber", and "Blackwing". Synchro Monsters have recieved support and monsters for many different Archetypes, much more than Ritual and Fusion monsters have. They can be ran effectively and have recieved Tuner support in "Laval", "Synchron", "Junk", "Karakuri", "Blackwing", "Vylon", "Six Samurai", "Plant", "XX-Saber", "Flamvell", "Naturia", "Scrap", "Infernity", "Fire Fist", "Mecha Phantom Beast", , "Zombie", "Nordic", "Fabled", "Watt", "Dragunity", "Agent", "Psychic", "Gusto", "Iron Chain", "Mist Valley", "Alien", and "Fish". Synchro Monsters are also often used in "Dragon Ruler" and "Mermail".

Machine-Type monsters are currently the most diverse monsters by Level, as they have Synchro Monsters that are Levels: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12; thanks to the addition of "Formula Synchron" and "T.G. Halberd Cannon".

Strategically speaking, Synchro Monsters allow for a large amount of rapid power to be Summoned with relative ease and speed. Most of them have very potent effects in addition to their ease in Summoning. They do not necessarily always have card advantage over Fusion Monsters, because a player might use up as many cards getting all of the Material Monsters on the field to perform a Synchro Summon in one turn, but they have the advantage of increased flexibility and speed over Fusion Monsters due to the fact that many of them have very non-specific requirements for them to be Summoned, so a player with a Tuner monster and a non-Tuner monster on the field will always have one or more options for Summoning, especially if card effects that allow Levels to be changed are used. As for those with specific requirements such as "Ally of Justice Decisive Armor" 1 tuner + 2 or more non-Tuner monsters, the tuner plus the 2 or more non-specific non tuner monsters levels must equal 10 and at least 3 monster must be used to Special Summon. Unlike Synchro monsters such as, "Karakuri Steel Shogun mdl 00X "Bureido"" which requires the non-Tuner to be a Machine-Type. That is to say that Ritual Monsters, Trap Monsters, and Token Monsters that have been used for Synchro Summoning must also meet the criteria of Level/Attribute/Type, as for Rank the requirements that can be noted are solely towards Attribute/Type as a Rank would not add to the Levels of the other monsters used, such as a Rank 4 Xyz monster + a Level 3 Tuner would not meet the summoning criteria for a Level 7 Synchro monster. Though if the requirements were strictly amount of monsters or a specific Attribute/Type is needed a Material can be used.

Role in the anime
Synchro Monsters have the power to manipulate Ener-D, allowing humans to accelerate their evolution. It was a vital part of the plot of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and the series antagonists' intentions. However, it was never explained exactly how Synchro Monsters obtained this ability.

A possible theory is linked to the statement that Synchro Monsters are the "symbols of human evolution". This could be the case when one considers how intricately linked humanity is to Duel Monsters and Ener-D. It is stated by Jakob that man's excessive use of Synchros caused Ener-D to spin faster, producing more energy and thus accelerating human evolution. It could be that this energy is fueling human evolution because of Synchros, the "symbols of human evolution". Humanity expresses its subconscious desire for evolution by obsessing over and excessively using Synchro Monsters.

Similar to how Synchro Monsters replaced Ritual and Fusion monsters when Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's started, Xyz Monsters have slowly started replacing Synchro Monsters since Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL started. New Booster Packs, Starter Decks, and Duel Terminals now focus on Xyz Monsters and included almost no more tuner Monsters and no Synchro Monsters have appeared in ZEXAL, save for "Iron Chain Dragon" and only in the preview for episode 1. Whilst Synchro Monsters still have not appeared in the ZEXAL anime or manga, additional support for Synchro Monsters has appeared in the Booster Packs Judgment of the Light and Shadow Specters and also featured in the Structure Deck: Saga of Blue-Eyes White Dragon.

Types of Synchro Summons
Synchro Summon
A Synchro Summon is the act of Special Summoning a Synchro Monster from the Extra Deck using a Tuner monster with additional non-Tuner monsters.
In the anime, while Synchro Summoning, the Tuner monster is said to be tuned with the other monsters.

Many characters in the Japanese anime have chants, often unique to them and each of their Synchro Monsters, which they recite while Synchro Summoning. Before the chants, the duelist announces the monsters being used, starting with the Levels and names of all non-Tuner monsters, from the lowest to the highest level, then the Level and name of the Tuner monster. In the English dub, this is reversed; the Tuner monster's name is said first and the non-Tuner monsters' names are said last.

During a Synchro Summon, the Tuner monster transforms into a number of green rings which corresponds to its Level. These rings pass through the non-tuner monsters, which turn into a number of stars which correspond to their Levels. A beam of light then envelops the non-tuner monsters, passing through the rings, and the Synchro Monster appears thereafter. In some special versions of Synchro Summons, the rings are a different color or are completely redesigned, for example, when "Shooting Quasar Dragon" is Limit Over Accel Synchro Summoned, the rings are gold instead of green, and when "Red Nova Dragon" is Synchro Summoned, the Tuner monsters transform into rings of fire, which form a sphere around the non-Tuner monster. Additionally, the characters may have personalized backgrounds and other graphics for Synchro Summons (most noticeably Vizor).

How to Summon a Synchro Monster
During your Main Phase 1 or 2, when the total Level of a face-up Tuner monster and 1 or more face-up Non-Tuner monster(s) you control is exactly the Level of a Synchro Monster in your Extra Deck, you can perform a Synchro Summon. These Tuner monster and the non-Tuner monster(s) will be called the Synchro Material Monsters.

In order to Synchro Summon a Synchro Monster from your Extra Deck (under normal conditions), you must declare the action and send the Synchro Material Monsters to the Graveyard. After sending the monsters from your side of the field to the Graveyard, you then take the Synchro Monster from your Extra Deck and place it in face-up Attack Position or Defense Position on your side of the field. However, you can't Synchro Summon a monster with a Xyz Monster. An Xyz Monster's Rank is not its Level, thus Xyz Monsters do not have levels. Therefore, they cannot be used for Synchro, Ritual, or Xyz Summons unless explicitly named as a requirement.

Additional Rules
A Synchro Summon is a kind of Special Summon, like Fusion Summon, Ritual Summon and Xyz Summon.

The mechanics on how a Synchro Summon is done are quite similar to a Ritual Summon, without the need of a Ritual Spell Card.

You can Synchro Summon while Macro Cosmos is in play. In this case, the Synchro Material Monsters are banished[1]. Also, Monster Tokens and Trap Monsters (and presumably, Spell Monsters) can be used as Synchro Material Monsters.

Synchro Monsters are like Fusion Monsters. Once the Synchro Monster is properly Synchro Summoned, it can be Special Summoned with "Monster Reborn", "Premature Burial", etc. as long as the Synchro Monster is not returned to the Extra Deck. If the Synchro Monster is sent to the Graveyard without being Summoned, such as by the effect of "Gale Dogra", then you cannot Special Summon it.

Performing a Synchro Summon does not start a chain.

You cannot use face-down monsters to perform a Synchro Summon.

You can negate a Synchro Summon with "Black Horn of Heaven", "Horn of Heaven", "Thunder King Rai-Oh", "Royal Oppression", etc.

In this case, you still send the monsters to the Graveyard. The Synchro Monster is not considered properly Summoned, so you cannot revive it with "Monster Reborn" or other similar effects. In addition, effects like "Odin, Father of the Aesir"'s do not activate, since they have not yet reached the field nor have been properly Summoned.

If the Synchro Monster requires Synchro Material Monsters of a specific Attribute (like "Hydro Genex"), you can use a monster with multiple Attributes (like "Elemental Mistress Doriado") as a Synchro Material Monster.

The monsters used in Synchro Summoning are treated as neither Tributed nor Destroyed.

You may also Synchro Summon more than once per turn, if you have the appropriate monsters out on the field to perform it, since it's a Special Summon.

Dark Synchro Summon
"Dark Tuning" redirects here. For the card known as "Dark Tuning" in the Anime, see "Wicked Rebirth".

Dark Synchro Summon is the antithesis of a Synchro Summon. Instead of the levels of the Tuner monster and the non-Tuner monster(s) adding up to the selected Synchro Monster's Level, the Dark Tuner monster's level is subtracted from the level of a non-Tuner monster(s), thus making a Dark Synchro Monster. Dark Synchro Monsters are new and unique to the game as they are the only monsters with a Negative Level. This feature is only available in the anime and the video games, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 4, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 5 and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 6.

In the anime, when a character Dark Synchro Summons, the white/green stars will go into the monster making it look in pain, and then a number of them unite together in order to have the rest ones be equal to the Dark Synchro Monster's level, which turn black and destroy the monster after coming out and spinning in a circle. Also, the character will say a Dark Synchro chant: "When the shadows are devoured by even darker shadows, the curtain pulls back, and reveals, a world without light!.

Accel Synchro Summon
Accel Synchro Summon is a method of Summoning the Accel Synchro Monsters. This type of Synchro Summoning was first seen in Episode 74, used by Bruno as Vizor (Antinomy in the Japanese version).

The Accel Synchro Summon varies from the normal use of Synchro Summoning. All of the monsters utilised for the summoning have to be one Tuner Synchro Monster and 1 non-Tuner Synchro Monster. Accel Synchro Summoning can be performed even during the opponent's turn. The required Tuner monster is called a Tuner Synchro Monster.

In the anime, it has been implied that in order to perform this type of Synchro Summoning, one must achieve Clear Mind at the time. You also need to have extreme speed (when a character Accel Syncro Summons when going at high speed, they will vanish, and then re-appear behind their opponent along with their Accel Synchro Monster).

Accel Synchro Monsters are still Synchro Monsters.

OCG/TCG Application
In the TCG/OCG, Synchro Monsters that have the Tuner sub-Type possess a Quick Effect that allows the controller to Synchro Summon during the opponent's Main Phase, with the exception of Life Stream Dragon and Pyrallis, Dragon of Purple Flames. Also, Accel Synchro Summoning is not officially recognised as a game term or summoning method. It is a Synchro Summon that occurs during the opponent's turn. As such, any Synchro Monster can be Synchro Summoned with this method.

Delta Accel Synchro Summon
Delta Accel Synchro Summon is a form of Synchro Summoning in the anime, in which there is one Tuner Synchro Monster and two non-Tuner Synchro Monsters used in the Synchro Summon. The only known Delta Accel Synchro Monsters are "T.G. Halberd Cannon" and "Cosmic Blazar Dragon". "T.G. Halberd Cannon" was used by Antinomy, when performing Top Clear Mind in episode 144. It has also been shown that performing Delta Accel successfully can cause a nearby star to explode with a black hole forming in its place. According to Antinomy, this is a Synchro surpassing Accel Synchro.

Double Tuning
Double Tuning (also known in some circles as Overtuning) is another method of Summoning Synchro Monsters; as the name suggests, two Tuner monsters are used, rather than the usual one. This type of Synchro Summoning was first seen in Episode 113, used by Jack Atlas when he summoned Red Nova Dragon.

Though "Red Nova Dragon" is the first to specifically say that it needs 2 Tuner monsters, double tuning is first possible with XX-Saber Gottoms when the EARTH-Attribute monster(s) used is also a Tuner monster; however, Gottoms can be Summoned with any number of Tuner monsters, provided they are EARTH. Also, almost every Synchro Monster could be theoretically Doubled Tuned with Phantom Lord Hide Ride, who can be used with more than 1 Tuner monster to Synchro Summon.

So far, the only monsters that require this method of Summoning are:
Red Nova Dragon and Vylon Omega

Limit Over Accel Synchro Summon
Limit Over Accel Synchro Summon is a type of Synchro Summon in the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime, requiring a Tuner Synchro Monster and at least 2 non-Tuner Synchro Monsters as material and the user to be in a state of "Over Top Clear Mind". During the Summon, the user, the user's Duel Runner, and Synchro Rings turn gold in color.

This type of Summon was only seen performed by Yusei Fudo. He first learned about surpassing Accel Synchro when Bruno performed a Delta Accel Synchro. In his next Duel against Z-one, Yusei used his new found knowledge to Limit Over Accel Synchro Summon "Shooting Quasar Dragon".

In the anime, "Life Stream Dragon" has the ability of changing the Level of other Synchro Monsters, which Yusei used to reduce the Level of "Red Dragon Archfiend", "Black-Winged Dragon", "Black Rose Dragon" and "Ancient Fairy Dragon" to 1.
